Problem with virtual server machine creation

Hi Guys when I create a virtual machine on virtual server 2005 R2 SP1, I get the following error message.

Virtual Server's configuration information could not be retrieved. The configuration value could not be retrieved. User does not have sufficient access rights

I have installed virtual server on windows vista.

I have tried both the options of turning on/off windows Authentication on IIS Authentication settings. No joy. Can you suggest any other options.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Problem with virtual server machine creation

From the error message you are describing, you are encountering a permissions issue accessing the Options.XML file which contains the Virtual Server configuration settings.

By default, Virtual Server 2005 R2 (including SP1) setup only creates a permission entry for the local administrators group (with full control permissions) during installation. You must script or manually configure additional permission entries to grant other users or groups the permissions needed to create, manage, and use new virtual machines, virtual hard disks, and virtual networks.

Be aware that new permission entries that you create through the Virtual Server Security Properties translate into specific NTFS permissions on the various VS 2005 R2 folders and files installed on your file system. Try to avoid making direct manual changes to NTFS permissions to grant users/groups access rights to these files as these can compromise VS security.

Another possibility that someone mentioned to me is that you have a corrupt Options.xml file. This could occur if your system shutdown or crashed and the Options.xml file was opened at the time.

Re: Problem with virtual server machine creation

I have this problem as well under Vista.

My security settings shwon from Virtual Server (2005 R2) list my local machines account with all and full access (including some greayed out special permissions) .

From the  Virtual Server\Server Properties I am flagged as not having sufficient permissions to look at VMRC Server, Virtual Server Scripts and Search Paths.

Is this the corruption you were talking about, and more importantly do I need to reinstall Virtual Server to fix this?

    TIA

Re: Problem with virtual server machine creation

Just out of curiosity, how many virtual machines are you running concurrently?

If you have not modified any of the Virtual Server file permissions manually, and started to experience this problem some time after successfully using VS 2005 R2, then it's possible.

Without doing more extensive troubleshooting, reinstalling VS 2005 R2 SP1 is certainly an option. Since your VMs will not removed, you can pretty safely uninstall, reboot, and reinstall VS to see if that solves your issue.

I got the same error, but after I run admin page as administrator (Vista), the issue is resolved.
